Helping children who fall through the cracks

Some children learn, play and see the world differently. Too often, a child with autism, ADHD or another difference is misunderstood, and the help they need comes late, or not at all.

We are starting a new program so that more of these children are noticed early and get the support they deserve. It begins with the people who know them best: parents, teachers and the wider community.

The road ahead

We are starting with the first step below. Each step after it depends on partners and funding.

  1. First step

    Community information sessions

Evenings for parents, teachers and anyone in the community who cares for children. Each session is planned to bring together several speakers on the early signs that a child may need extra support, and where families can turn next. We hope to plan the first sessions together with community organizations; dates will be announced here and on our mailing list.

  2. Planned

    A course for teachers

A course of about a month that teaches the basic signs to look for and practical ways to help a child in class. We hope to develop it with government help and other community organizations.

  3. Planned

    Help navigating the healthcare system

Guidance for parents finding their way through the healthcare system, so their child gets as much help as possible.

  4. As funding allows

A specialist in every religious school

Religious schools often have the least funding for this kind of support. We would like to place a specialist in each one.

  5. As funding allows

    Assessments and one-on-one help

For families who cannot afford it, help paying for a child’s assessment, and one-on-one support afterwards.

  6. Our long-term goal

    A school of their own

One day, with families and qualified educators, we hope to open a school for children whose needs are not met in a regular classroom.

Our information sessions are educational. They are not a substitute for an assessment by a qualified professional.
